New Skytree ambient: Forest Family

From the bandcamp page of Evan Snyder (Skytree):

After nearly 20 years of recording music, Forest Family is my first all ambient album. It took a long time to emerge. Its 5 slowly but continuously evolving tracks span an hour and 25 minutes, with details buried throughout. So, there’s no pressure to listen all at once. If you do though, it’s a continuous trail from beginning to end. It goes pretty deep into the woods, but it’s carefree about how it gets there. The terrain is ever changing.

Forest Family is dedicated to all who need a little sonic vacation, or catalyst for any practice of introspection and relaxation. Whether it’s meditation, long drives, therapy, a guided experience, working with your hands, feeling through things or simply zoning out, this album was designed to be a nice little acoustic helper. That’s what it was to me while making it, especially over these last few years. So in that spirit, it’s freely available to anyone, but donations are welcome.

This began following a studio pivot to hardware and dive into modular synthesis, including lots of experiments with novel input sources – things like natural quartz crystal piezos, ionizing radiation from uranium, native copper antennae, and changing resistance from streams, soil and trees. It’s a process I’m personally referring to as geosonification. That is, data sonification of nature and geology. I intend to keep exploring this endless road for a darn long time. This is the first project to utilize these techniques.

There are all sorts of other bits and birds in Forest Family as well, like stacks of field recordings, previously forgotten analog tapes, radio frequencies, guitar, flute and various textural memories. There’s even an appearance from a wild Bobby West (aka Erothyme) from atop a mountain. Last but greatest, there are the lovely vocals my friend and collaborator Isla Hinck contributed to the final track, Somnum, which closes out the woodland trail on a nice warm and human tone.

Otherworldly illustrator Marty Millar created the foliated visual art to accompany the sounds along the way. To highlight his amazing work, a limited run of 11″ x 17″ matte Forest Family posters are available for order. These include a bonus ambient track, Nimbus, and are signed and numbered by yours truly.

Thank you for listening and supporting, fellow entities, and welcome to the Forest Family,

Evan / Skytree
